I’m always excited to revisit Steampunk world of Zeppelins. The world of bizarre crossovers between factories and cathedrals; steam and electricity, inspired by Tesla’s research; and a heavy machinery, of course.

In this tutorial, we will be going step by step through pre-production, blocking out the main shapes. And then straight to detailing, setting up lighting and later on to matte painting, to learn the main principles behind efficient 3d workflow.

The aim of this tutorial is pretty straightforward, to help you cross the gap between imaginary worlds and a real canvas. We will accomplish it by studying what works and what does not, when dealing with millions of polygons and some electric trains.

ELUSIVE FEELING AND SIMULATION

Apparently, what happened is that the digital camera clamped the highs and destroyed the lows of the color range. It’s not a secret that the eye is acting differently from the camera. It sees the slightest difference in hue, and adapts very well to high dynamic range.

But how can we capture this freaking piece of ice, if camera just doesn’t always help?

Paint it. Or if you can’t – simulate it in 3d, just like I did with that attic (I don’t have one nearby). Build the world around, breathe the life into it and capture its beauty in refraction. Or in shadow play. Use whatever works.

Chances are, you won’t stay true to nature and will pour too much of your vision into this frozen thing.

In the end, I don’t care whether it is physically correct, I want it to be aesthetically correct.

Or as Pixar formulated, physically plausible.

BENDING THE LIGHT OR A LOT OF RAY TRACING

Some lighting scenarios are more difficult than the others. I bet you have set up three point lighting at least a couple times, to make some model appear appealing and Hollywood-like.

But what about object, that defies the form principle and bends the light in a weird fashion?

The lots of interesting stuff happens insight of that piece of ice. The part of the rays get refracted, the other part is reflected (based on Fresnel reflectance value). And – oh dear – some parts are even dispersed in the frozen depths.

Apparently, the world is not made of plaster.

Luckily, today we have the ability to throw thousands of rays in Blender (I obviously mean Cycles render engine) and get as much light bounces inside the object, as our computer can handle.

About the image

Imaginary attic, with the book hidden somewhere in its depths, was pretty damn visually provoking (at least, when I imagined it).

Came almost as 1 piece, and that was great as I didn’t have to painfully iterate through various details and stuff. Everything was just there.

Dappled Light

The biggest discovery for me in this ‘The Hobbit: There and Back Again’ scene was the dappled light – as James Gurney is calling this kind of light texture.  As I desperately want to share my 5 cents about such lighting, I’ve already started writing a tutorial.

Indeed, the right lighting can transform dull image into pretty nice image, rich on atmosphere and goosebumps.

Alpha-mapped Spider Webs

This semi-transparent woven bastards proved to be not so easy to render. First I tried geometry way of doing webs – and quickly arrived at alpha-mapped solution. Call it game engine way, nothing more than plane, transparent shader and texture plugged in. The trick is to bend the basic plane with a texture, so it looks 3d.

Photo Textures of the Old Books

Some years ago, I made a few photos of the old dusty books and papers (as you can imagine, they were lying somewhere in the attic). Low res, but so damn useful sometimes. Feel free to download it and use in your grungy scenes.
