Haha, I remember playing Doom as well! It was the first thing I learned to type in to the DOS window, and so it was also the first computer game I remember playing (unless you count drawing mustaches on people's faces in MS Paint). Those other games are certainly influential as well. I would love to see what kind of game you might create one day, Gleb!

That's really cool, Aidy! The people you're around can certainly play a role in the direction you end up heading in. I hope I can follow suit and use my work to pay the bills one day, too!

making any kind of art will improve you as an artist so long as you reflect on your work critically. Asking questions like, what have i learned here? What would i do differently if i was to do it again?

I remember talking to pro's within the industry who would say the same thing, if i was to make this again, i would change these things, and then they would list a bunch of techniques or new workflows that they'd encountered.

A game could have a 2d drawn background and characters so there aren't really any rules. A game like Limbo or Inside doesn't have a massive amount of texturing involved, whereas another game might not really have much animation in it.

All art to me seems to be related, it's coming up with the good ideas and communicating them well that is what lies underneath everything.

Short animated films would definitely help with getting to grips with modeling, though depending on what you want to do you may need to learn about normal maps and how to optimize for efficient design. Getting things to run smoothly at 60fps in other words. Those aren't as important on short films. :)

I would follow what you want to do, so if i was just starting out and wanted to eventually work in on lots of awesome high end games as an environment artist i'd look at some large outsourcing companies that get used by the top companies, then i'd work backwards, so i'd break it down, i'd learn how to do a simple prop from game forums like polycount.com and get posting and get collecting feedback. Watching a massive truckload of tutorials. :D

Hope that helps! :)
